Notice of Special Meeting

The Downtown Board of Commissioners will hold a special (executive session) on Wednesday, 6/30, at 8am. The meeting will be held at the offices of Diana, Conti & Tunila. The agenda will include the annual performance and compensation review for the Downtown Manager.

Butterfly Hunt 2021

It’s time for our Butterfly Hunt!

We have decorated some downtown windows with butterflies created by our community members. Come on downtown to check them out!

We have ALSO hidden a few small butterfly cut-outs with clues. These clues will help you solve the challenges below. You may complete all the challenges or only one! Children and adults are welcome to play. However, we’re reserving the prizes for the children. The grand prize will be a $20 Gift Card to the Downtown Business of your choice. We will draw TWO prizes!

  1. Download the Challenge Worksheets (below) or pick them up from the Welcome Tent at the Butterfly Stroll on 5/22.
  2. Complete as many challenges as you would like.
  3. 2 Ways to Win
    1. Drop off your completed worksheets to the Welcome Tent at the Butterfly Stroll and choose a small prize AND be entered into the gift card drawing.
      OR
    2. Enter online at the link below by 6pm on 5/23 and be entered into the gift card drawing.

Winter has passed, and what a winter (or year!) it has been! Downtown is celebrating spring and the hope of a bright future with a Butterfly Stroll. Our Downtown businesses, and the Manchester community, are strong and resilient! They have weathered the storm of the pandemic and are ready to emerge better than ever – just like the beautiful butterfly emerges from the cocoon!

Our Connect-4 Game was so popular on Small Business Saturday we decided to bring it back! Stop by the welcome tent to pick up your Butterfly Bingo gameboard. Then, complete shopping challenges to earn stickers and enter to win prizes!

Butterfly Scavenger Hunt (for the kids!)

Head Downtown and hunt for butterflies in the storefront windows! View the many beautiful butterflies that have been created by local community members.  Hunt for clues to solve the riddles. Turn in your completed riddle sheets at the welcome tent to receive a prize (limited supply)!

The prizes are for the kids, but everyone can have fun hunting for butterflies!

The worksheets will be available to download beginning on 5/20. You can also pick up printed copies of the worksheets at the welcome tent during the Butterfly Stroll!

Butterfly Stroll Artists Announced

Downtown Manchester will soon be aflutter with fabulous butterflies! We are so excited by the line up of artists who plan to display their art at the Butterfly Stroll on May 22nd from 10am to 4pm. Most of the artwork will be available for purchase after this event. Please use the information provided below to contact the artist directly regarding the purchase of artwork.

Bethany Terzi of Ethereal Stills Photography
Bethany is a photographer who finds inspiration in nature and animals. Bethany utilizes macro close-up photos to bring out the true beauty of nature and create a connection with the viewer.

Carver Rapp of Twin Dragons Designs
Carver Rapp is an artist and art teacher living and working in Manchester. Carver’s work is primarily sculpture with a variety of materials including ceramics, wood, fiberglass and other materials. The sculptures range in design, from large monolithic outdoor pieces to intricately detailed designs that fit on a shelf.

Dee Volkert
Dee enjoys being creative with whatever materials find their way into her hands with the hope of bring joy to others. Watercolors, wool, embroidery, thrift store treasures, and fairy houses are just a bit of the wonder you would see surrounding her. Dee will be creating an acrylic abstract which will be available for purchase (babcidee@live.com).

With every stroke of the brush, Jaii Marc Renee opens his heart to the world.  Jaii Marc used painting as a mechanism to channel the difficulties of mental health challenges and views each piece of art as a piece of his heart. Joyce and Jody are a mother and daughter team who have combined their artistic skills and names to create Jo Joy Art. They specialize in oil paintings and Giclee prints inspired by nature. Kim Desrosiers of Be Brave Art & Design
Kim Desrosiers considers herself a friendly creativity guide-ess! Like many creative types she is more than a bit obsessive, overly passionate and easily carried away by her enthusiasms to experiment with different mediums. Having experienced frustration of a long-term creative block, she rediscovered her creativity more recently in mixed media collage and painting.

One of Kim’s primary enthusiasms is to create sacred space for heart-felt connection where people can come together to explore and express themselves creatively. Her mission is to provide support, guidance and encouragement for the force of creativity that lives inside of us all. In 2014, Kim founded Be Brave Art & Design Studio to offer a variety of art workshops. Kim has years of experience teaching art to children & adults, as well as recreation therapy with the elderly. She is a dedicated mother, prayer warrior and compassionate caregiver for many. Kim resides in Manchester with her spunky Jack Russell Terrier, Lilly, who is always under-foot in her art studio or garden.

Mickie Bettencourt of Network, Inc.
Mickie is an artist with a passion for recreating discarded items into art. Mickie is also a strong advocate for adults with disabilities and has created the Butterfly installation in collaboration with Network, Inc.  Network, Inc. is a local non-profit which provides services for adults with disabilities. Mickie will be creating a sculpture.

Stacey Zackin of Galleries at WORK_SPACE
Stacey does not consider herself an “artist” per se, but is artistic and enjoys being creative. She creates hand-designed greeting cards featuring her doodles – which have even been used to illustrate a health and wellness workbook for teens. Stacey also works as a Life & Business Coach and has used her doodles to present professional development workshops to college campuses and fortune 500 companies. Stella Malota
Stella is an experienced artist with expertise in visual fine arts. In the past Stella participated in the Downtown’s Runner on Main art project. Stella works with a variety of media including fabric and plaster. Stella’s potted spring display will be available for purchase (smalota@gmail.com).

Stephen is a local artist specializing in hand-tinted etchings and original paintings.  Stephen will be creating a mixed-media sculpture which will be available for purchase.

Create a Butterfly for Downtown Windows!

Calling artists of all ages and experience levels! This is open to individuals as well as groups and organizations. You are invited to help decorate our Downtown windows for the Butterfly Stroll! Sign up and we will save a spot for your creation!

  1. Artists must register by May 1st. (Registration may close early due to high interest.)
  2. Butterflies must be lightweight and easy to hang (paper is best).
  3. Butterflies must be two-dimensional and no larger than a standard-sized piece of paper.
  4. Butterflies must be dropped off  at The Firestone | Art Studio & Cafe (during normal business hours)  between April 1st and May 15th.

Butterfly Stroll: A Call to Artists

You are invited to celebrate spring with a butterfly sculpture or art piece in the medium of your choosing. The District will be selecting 15-20 artists to create beautiful art pieces to be displayed on Main Street on Saturday, 5/22 from 10am to 4pm. This installation will be a part of other special events taking place Downtown that day. Join us in celebrating the resilience and strength of our Downtown businesses as we leave winter behind and flutter into a brighter future!

 

 

Details:

  • Art Pieces should celebrate spring and tie into our butterfly theme in some way. All art must be family-friendly and appropriate for public viewing.
  • Any medium may be used
  • Pieces should be of significant size to create a visual impact on Main Street, but not so large as to impede pedestrian traffic on the sidewalks
  • Artists are responsible for installation and removal on 5/22
    • Installation must take place on 5/22 between 6am and 9:30am
    • Removal must take place between 4pm and 10pm that same day
    • Artists may choose to stay with their piece if desired
  • Installation Options for 3 Dimensional Pieces
    • Free standing / structure provided by artist
    • Attached to channel stakes on portable stanchions (sign posts) provided by the District
    • Attached to channel stakes installed in planters/ grassy areas (provided by the District)
  • 2 Dimensional Pieces
    • Will be displayed in storefront windows of Downtown businesses
    • Easel should be provided artist
  • You are welcome to list your artwork for sale. The District will list available artwork and contact information on our website. We will not coordinate any purchases or payments directly.
  • Artists will be featured in promotional materials and news articles. Please be sure to fill out the registration form accurately and completely to ensure that we have the correct information.
